Luigi Bartolucci began his career in the French army in 1809 as a lieutenant. He subsequently received many awards as well as the rank of Captain. He was expelled for having fought in a duel and was arrested in Rome for instigating riots. He left to travel the Orient and returned to Rome continuing his conspiratorial activities. After being arrested 3 times, in 1837 he was sentenced to 21 years in prison which he served in exile in France. In 1846 Pope Pius IX granted amnesty to political prisoners and he returned to Rome. He was then elected a representative to the Constituent Assembly of the Roman Republic and following the fall of the Republic he went to Britain and Nice. After the Villafranca Armistice was signed he returned to Italy, where he died.
