Luigi Bartolucci began his career in the French army in 1809 as a lieutenant. He subsequently received many awards as well as the rank of Captain. He was expelled for having fought in a duel and was arrested in Rome for instigating riots. He left to travel the Orient and returned to Rome continuing his conspiratorial activities. After being arrested 3 times, in 1837 he was sentenced to 21 years in prison which he served in exile in France. In 1846 Pope Pius IX granted amnesty to political prisoners and he returned to Rome. He was then elected a representative to the Constituent Assembly of the Roman Republic and following the fall of the Republic he went to Britain and Nice. After the Villafranca Armistice was signed he returned to Italy, where he died.

Gianicolo: eroi del risorgimento

AS199-3

February the 4th

(Goffredo Mameli)

So young, so pale...

Goffredo Mameli started his studies at a young age under Giuseppe
Canale. This started his partriotic fever and his drive for national
dependence.
Mameli joined a "Entelema" society once concentrated on
historical events, but eventually changed and concentrated on
contemporary topics. This influenced Mameli to participate in Genese
politics.
Mameli wrote the lyrics to Fratelli d'Italia, now Italy's
national anthem.
Mameli had many accomplishments, he was spokesman of the Genoese
volunteer, became editor of the Diario del Popolo newspaper, and
finally was promoted to the rank of captian of general staff.
He was injured accidentally by a bayonet and had his leg amputated.
Despite attempts to avoid infection Mameli died at the young age of 21
two months before his 22nd birthday.
